Purpose
The Indian Ink stain Test is done to detect presence of Cryptococcus neoformans(a type of encapsulated yeast) especially in the central nervous system.
Patient Preparation
The patient might be asked to empty their bladder and bowels before the test.
Samples
2 – 4 ml Fungal specimen collected in a Clean sterile tube A lumbar puncture is used to collect CSF and the patient is required to stay very still while the fluid is being withdrawn. Maintained at room temperature.

No Cryptococcus identified
Results Turnaround
1 – 2days after receipt of samples.
Diseases / Diagnostic indicators
Visible colonies indicate a fungal infection which more often is associated with cryptococcal meningitis.
