Undergarments can be of value in DNA and forensic investigations. Underwear’s always contain some secretions such as semen, vaginal discharge and skin cells along the lining which may have some good amount of viable dna that can be used for dna testing and forensic investigations. Undergarments can be used for DNA testing in the absence of a participant and provide an alternative to invasive acquisition of samples with a 50% success rate. They are easy to collect and store and can be used for infidelity and rape cases if the alleged person is not available for sample collection. However, the quality and amount of dna in the underwear maybe not be sufficient for analysis and the sample has high chances of contamination from dirt in the clothing.
1. A recently used innerwear should be used.
2. The undergarment should not be washed to prevent loss of stains on the clothing.
3. Undergarments with body stains would be more appropriate and have high chances of valuable DNA.
4. Spot the stained area and cut using a clean and sterile razor, or Scissors.
5. Place the stained piece into a clean envelope and seal.
6. Label accordingly (name, collection date, relationship).
7. Send to the laboratory for analysis.
