PACIFIERS/ TEETHING RINGS FOR DNA TESTING

Teething rings are used for soothing sore gums in babies during the teething stage while pacifiers’ sooth the baby during early developmental stages. Teething rings and pacifiers can be used for DNA testing in the absence of a participant, offer an alternative to invasive acquisition of samples with a 50% success rate. However, teething rings and pacifiers are easily contaminated and the chemical composition of the material used in manufacture may affect the DNA yield.



How to Collect Teething Rings and Pacifiers for DNA testing

1. Samples should not contain moisture and should have been frequently used.

2. Wash your hands and dry them using a clean towel.

3. Pick up the pacifier or teething ring using gloves or dry paper towel.

4. Place in a clean paper envelope.

5. Label accordingly (name, collection date, reltionship).

6. Send to the laboratory for analysis.
